How it works
Paste or type a list of names, one per line or separated by commas. Choose whether to split by a fixed number of teams or by a fixed team size, then select Generate teams. Teams are drawn randomly and, when the names don't divide evenly, the extra people are spread one per team starting from the first team, so no team ends up more than one person bigger than any other. Select Shuffle again to redraw new teams from the same names and settings. Duplicate names are kept exactly as entered — if two different people share a first name, both show up separately in the results, they are never merged into one. Everything you type, your chosen split, and the teams you've drawn are saved in your browser, so they're still here if you reload the page.
Paste a roster — for a pickup game, a work off-site, a classroom, or a family game night — and this tool splits it into randomly shuffled, evenly sized teams in one click.
Choosing team count vs. team size
Use number of teams when you know how many teams you want (say, two sides for a scrimmage) and don’t care how many people land on each one. Use team size when you know how many people should be on each team (say, four-player tables) and want the tool to work out how many teams that produces. The two settings are mutually exclusive — switching the “Split by” choice swaps which number you’re editing.
Keeping teams fair when the numbers don’t divide evenly
Thirteen people split three ways doesn’t divide evenly, and this tool never dumps the leftover people onto one unlucky team. Instead the single extra person (or two, or however many are left over) is handed to a different team each time, starting with the first team, so every team ends up within one person of every other team.
Re-drawing teams
If the first draw puts two people together who’d rather not be on a team, or you just want a different mix, select Shuffle again. It re-runs the random draw using the exact same name list and the exact same team-count or team-size setting — nothing needs to be re-typed.
Frequently asked questions
Does the random team generator save my list if I reload the page?
Yes. Your name list, whether you're splitting by team count or team size, and the teams you last generated are all saved in your browser's local storage, not on a server. Reloading the page brings all of it back exactly as you left it.
What happens if the names don't divide evenly into teams?
Team sizes never differ by more than one person. If there's a remainder, each extra person goes to a different team, one at a time starting with the first team, instead of piling every extra person onto a single team.
Can I enter the same name twice, like for two people named Sam?
Yes. Names are kept exactly as you enter them and are never deduplicated, so two different people who share a name both appear separately in the results — one on each of their drawn teams.
Can I copy the teams to paste somewhere else?
Yes. Select Copy teams as text to copy the full list to your clipboard. If that doesn't work in your browser, the teams are also shown in a plain text box right below the button — select that text and copy it manually.
